We got up and went for a good look around for the market. Barnstaple is a traditional market town, and each Tuesday and Friday there is a market where you can buy most things. The pannier market is a lovely building, which is steeped in local history.

Winnie loves to poke around on the stalls, and we ended up spending 4 hours in there! Came out with half a pound of cheese and a bag of grapes.

A cup of tea then in Sacks, and back home before the rain set in.

Winnie is seriously thinking about moving in with me here at Espania House. She says she walks so much more here in Barnstaple as there are no real hills compared with Ilfracombe which is just a big hill, especially where she lives. I think that it would be nice for her to live here- I would value her company.

We are going to snuggle up tonight and watch the double eviction on Big Brother. Winnie thinks that Darnell and Rex are going to go- I say Katrine and Rachel. Loser makes breakfast in bed!

Yours sincerely

Friday is market day in Barnstaple, and I always like to pop up, and see some old friends.

I start off by popping in to see Neil at the Bank, to make sure that my account is in order. I have heard on the news this morning that another bank has made the second biggest loss in history, and wanted to make sure that my money was safe. Neil laughed, and said that it’s fine. I just wanted to make sure that my money is not going to be used for anything it shouldn’t be.

Neil has been a good friend for some time now. I joined the bank in 2001, when my last bank bank stopped sending me statements. I told them to make sure they sort it out, but they never, so I went in to my new bank, and saw someone called Simon. He reassured me that they would send me statements, and it only took 10 minutes to open my account.

Since then Neil, who sits on the desk as you go in, has helped me no end. He even helped me pick a mobile phone out before! He is clever, as he remembers my account number, mt address- he even knows when it is my birthday! I often see him walking his dog, with his wife- I don’t think that they have any children. I did follow them once, to see where he lived, but I lost them again. I think they live up near Ralph.

Bought some more eggs from the man with the Tea Cosy hat in the market. He said that rain is on the way- though how he knows, I don’t understand.

As I had not spent much from my pension, I bought myself a magazine, and went for a cup of coffee in Green Lanes. I like to buy magazines on topics which I do not know about, so I can learn something. This week, it was a car magazine. It was all about ‘pimping’ cars up, which I think means to do them up and make them look nice. Some of them did look like they had had a lot of time spent on them! I did not understand a lot of the rest of the magazine, so I left it on the table.  I never did learn to drive- that is why I won’t try Ralph’s wheelchair.

I went over to Brian Fords then, to see what bargains they were. Got some more sausages for when Winnie comes tomorrow; thought I could do them with some mashed potato’s and gravy. When I got home, I realised that I did not have any potato’s, so I have had to walk over again. I felt like everyone was looking at me when I went back in- I don’t know what they must have thought!

Spent this afternoon watching the olympics opening ceromony. It did go on for a long time, but the stadium looks amazing. They said it was very hot there- it must be hard running in all that heat.

Meeting Winnie at the bus stop at 11.30 tomorrow morning, so I am off to bed early tonight, to make sure I am up in time. I can’t wait to see her again- I think about her lots. Tomorrow is also my birthday- 69 years old- so it will be a great way to spend the day with her. A card came for me this morning- it had Patrick’s writing on- so I have left it to open tomorrow.

Yours sincerely
